One of the great Italian cyclists, Gino Bartali was born on July 18 1914. Turning professional in 1935 he had over 170 victories during his twenty five year career. His legendary rivalry with Fausto Coppi had Italy divided during the 1940's. Bartali is the only rider with Tour de France wins ten years apart. His only regret was that despite taking part in the worlds seven times he was never crowned champion. Gino Bartali sadly passed away on 5 May 2000 at his home near Florence.
